What Causes Cavities?

Cavities are both hated by you and your dentist in Tampa. A cavity is a spot on your tooth where your tooth’s enamel has decayed. This hole must be filled by your dentist otherwise you could end up with damaged teeth and an even bigger problem. When it comes to preventing cavities, your dentist can help you! But, to fight against cavities, it is necessary to understand how and why they form. Most people know it involves not brushing your teeth and sugar. However, there are other reasons too. Check them out below!

1. Cavity Formation

The way a cavity forms is pretty simple. After eating, food debris gets stuck in between your teeth. These food particles become a breeding ground for bacteria. They grow and cause plaque. The bacteria also eat the sugars left in the food, thereby creating an acidic byproduct that damages your teeth. If left there, it will harm your enamel and create a cavity.

2. Receding Gums

Another big cause of cavities is receding gums. This is part of the normal aging process because gum disease or forceful brushing can cause gums to become swollen or damaged. Your tooth’s roots will be exposed and vulnerable to bacteria that will cause cavities. To combat this, make sure you brush, not scrub! Also, brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. Practicing good oral hygiene will help stop cavities from forming.

3. Old Fillings

Your old fillings could also cause cavities. As time goes by, your fillings will weaken and crack. These cracks can let the tooth become loose, thereby allowing bacteria to get in – which means they can cause decay. To prevent that, schedule regular checkups with your dentist! They will be able to examine your fillings and ensure that they are intact and in good condition.
