What is preventive dentistry? What is the goal of preventative dentistry? What is the connection between preventive care and oral hygiene? If you’ve ever asked yourself these questions, read on and find out the answers you’ve been searching for.

Preventive dentistry is a modern practice of keeping your teeth healthy and the goal of preventive dentistry is to make sure you have less dental treatments. If you have any dental problems due to bad oral hygiene or any other reason, your dental team will recommend you a treatment to get your mouth into good condition and then work out a plan to help you keep them that way.

How does it work?

Primary preventive dentistry is helpful to everyone. Your dental team removes all the plaque and tartar from your team and then they will show you a proper way to brush and floss and recommend oral hygiene products. Remember that good oral hygiene is half of your health. Also, your diet is a topic your preventive dentist will discuss with you. They’ll check your fillings to make sure there are no rough edges that might make cleaning more difficult.

Can dental erosion be prevented?

Dental erosion is the loss of tooth enamel caused by acid. If you have fizzy drinks, smoothies, or citrus fruit too often, they can cause dental erosion. It is recommended that you wait one hour after before brushing your teeth when you do consume acidic foods and drinks. This will allow saliva to restore the natural balance of mineral content.

Can smoking and drinking affect teeth and gums?

The answer is yes. Smoking can severely impact gum disease and to make matters worse, cause tooth staining and tooth loss. Alcoholic drinks can cause mouth cancer and if you combine smoking and drinking, then the risk is even bigger. The best thing you can do is to quit smoking and stop drinking altogether.

What can I do?

  •       There are a number of things that you can do to contribute to your oral health. First things first, brush your teeth at least two times a day and floss too because brushing alone cleans only 60% of the surface of the teeth.
  •       You should also, use mouthwash because they contain antibacterial ingredients. However, don’t use mouthwash right after brushing.
  •       Reduce the intake of sugary foods and drinks.
  •       Chew sugar-free gums because they will help you produce more saliva so your mouth doesn’t dry out.
  •       Use an electric toothbrush with an oscillating, rotating action because they are better in removing plaque than regular, manual brushes.
  •       Visit your dentist regularly.
